How to organise courier jobs, routes and proof of delivery

A practical guide from Nexus it today · Updated 18 September 2026

You can win work through existing customers, local recommendations or a courier marketplace. The challenge is keeping the booking, collection details, route and delivery evidence together. A useful courier workflow gives every job one clear record, then follows it from acceptance to completion.

Nexus Drive It: Book it, Route it, Track it — bookings, routes, tracking and proof of delivery.
Nexus tools for bookings, routes, tracking and proof of delivery.

1. Give every booking a complete job record

Record the collection and delivery addresses, contact details, item description, dimensions, approximate weight, agreed price and any time restrictions. Add stairs, parking and loading requirements before you commit. Keep private customer details inside the secure booking record.

Drive It lets you add your own customer jobs alongside eligible network work. The benefit is a consistent working method, even when the bookings came from different places. Start with the Book It booking workflow.

2. Plan collections and deliveries around the real work

Check which collections must happen before which deliveries. Allow time for loading, customer availability and breaks, and confirm the vehicle and handling arrangements are suitable. A route needs to work for the goods and the people involved, as well as the postcodes.

Drive It route planning helps organise the stops in your working day. Review the result against access restrictions and your agreed commitments. Google Maps setup and usage charges are separate where required.

3. Give customers a clear way to follow progress

Supported tracking can help a customer understand where their delivery has reached without relying on a chain of separate messages. Use the correct driver workflow, location permissions and connectivity. Tracking reflects the updates the device supplies; it is not a promise of uninterrupted location coverage.

Explain how your customer will receive the tracking information. Optional notification subscriptions and their charges are separate from the base Drive It membership. Read about courier tracking before promising a particular channel or update frequency.

4. Keep delivery evidence with the job

Record the relevant recipient information, photographs or signature through the delivery workflow. Note an exception when a delivery cannot be completed as agreed. Evidence attached to the correct order makes it easier to answer later questions than a photograph lost among unrelated messages.

Only capture the information needed for the delivery and keep it available to authorised people. Explore digital proof of delivery.

5. Review the day before taking more work

Check incomplete jobs, customer questions, missing evidence and the next day’s loading requirements. Keep agreed courier pay and your costs in view when deciding whether another job fits. Software supports that decision; it does not guarantee a profit or a volume of work.

Where Deliverate fits

Deliverate is the connected marketplace where approved self-employed couriers can view suitable customer requests and submit quotes. It is free for approved drivers to join. Drive It is the optional toolkit for managing your own bookings, routes, tracking and proof of delivery. One approved Nexus driver account supports both services.

Try the workflow with your own business

The first 50 eligible approved drivers receive a free 90-day Drive It trial. Eligible new drivers after those places are allocated receive 30 days. Booking tools, route planning, supported tracking and proof of delivery are included during the trial.

No card is required and no paid subscription starts automatically. At the end, the account returns to the free plan and saved work remains available read-only unless you choose to upgrade. The current Drive It subscription is £79 per month including VAT per driver seat. One introductory trial applies per customer across Nexus products; existing subscribers do not receive another trial when adding or switching products. Job-specific, network and third-party charges remain separate.
