Long-distance courier work: make the return journey count

Driver guide · 25 October 2026

A long-distance delivery can leave useful space in your van on the way out, on the way home, or both. Suitable extra collections and return loads can help you make more of those miles—but only when the timing, load and price work for the whole journey.

What is a return load?

A return load is a collection you carry on the journey back towards your base or next planned destination. It does not have to end at your own postcode. What matters is whether the extra distance and handling fit the route you have already agreed.

For owner drivers in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the practical question is the same: does this opportunity improve the working day after allowing for every extra cost and commitment?

How Drive It and Deliverate fit together

Deliverate provides the connected marketplace for suitable delivery requests. Drive It supports your own bookings, route planning, supported customer tracking and proof of delivery. Driver onboarding is handled through Nexus Drive It, with approval and the relevant membership conditions applying before you take work.

Check the current eligibility and plan requirements for each kind of opportunity. Marketplace requests, your own customer bookings and work offered through the connected network can have different conditions. Seeing a job does not mean you are eligible to accept it.

Check the whole journey before quoting

Start with your confirmed booking. Check the collection and delivery windows, then allow realistic time for loading, unloading, traffic and breaks. A collection that looks close on a map can still involve a long detour or an awkward access window.

Check the goods, dimensions, weight, available load space and handling requirements. Include the extra miles, waiting, parking, tolls and any additional help in your decision. For a customer quote, declare your VAT status and give the final all-inclusive price required by the booking.

An example of a route that might fit

Illustrative example, not an advertised job: a Leeds-based driver has a confirmed delivery in Birmingham. A later collection near Birmingham for delivery towards Yorkshire could fit the return journey. It only becomes a workable plan after the collection window, detour, vehicle space and delivery deadline have all been checked.

Multiple collections and deliveries can also fit along a longer route. Keep each collection before its matching delivery and allow for how the load changes after every stop. Do not add another customer’s goods to a dedicated or exclusive booking unless the agreed service permits it.

From an opportunity to a confirmed run

Create your driver account, complete the requested checks and review suitable opportunities. Quote only for work you can fulfil. Once a booking is accepted and confirmed through the applicable workflow, organise the stops and keep the job details together.

Use supported tracking and delivery evidence as agreed with the customer. If a delay affects a later stop, update the affected booking promptly. The aim is a route you can complete reliably, rather than the largest possible number of stops.
